Nene Park is honoured to have been chosen as one of three locations in Cambridgeshire to receive a special tree from The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) ‘Tree of Trees’ – which stood tall as a message of hope, regeneration and optimism to the nation and the world as part of the Platinum Jubilee weekend.
On Monday 24th October the Lord-Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire Mrs Julie Spence OBE QPM came to Nene Park and presented the Tree to the Park. She was met by Chief Executive Matthew Bradbury and Project Officer (Community Gardens), Gareth Lorman.
The tree presented to the Park is a multi-stem betula pendula (birch) currently in a pot embossed with Her Majesty’s cypher. The tree will be planted out at a later date in the Jubilee Garden which is being developed behind the Visitor Centre in Ferry Meadows to mark this important Jubilee year. The tree will then become part of the living legacy in honour of Her Majesty, joining over a million trees already planted across the UK as part of The QGC which was created to mark the Platinum Jubilee.
The other locations in Cambridgeshire to receive a tree are Abbey People and Wisbech Adventure Playground.
Lord-Lieutenant Mrs Julie Spence OBE QPM said, “It was a pleasure to present one of our allocation of 3 trees from the Jubilee Tree of Trees to Nene Park Trust. I know they will look after and nurture it and ensure it’s part of an amazing natural environment which the people of Peterborough can enjoy for many years to come. It will be a fitting tribute to our longest serving monarch Queen Elizabeth II.”
Matthew Bradbury, chief executive at Nene Park Trust, said: “Nene Park Trust is delighted to be gifted a tree from the Queen’s Green Canopy ‘Tree of Trees’. We will be honoured to plant and nurture the tree here at Ferry Meadows as a tribute to Her Majesty, alongside our Jubilee Memorial Community Garden that is currently being created.”
